November 13, 2008 3 comments

Well done to SharePoint MVP, Stephen Cummins for getting a user group set up to help people get to grips with the collaboration solution.  They have their first event on November 17th at the MS Atrium building in Sandyford.  They’ll be talking about setting up your first MOSS server.

Windows User Group Ireland

November 10, 2008 4 comments
There was some talk about this recently and it’s happened.  We’ve renamed the group and exapnded our scope.
Most of us Windows administrators/engineeers/consultants deal with ore than just server.  We also have to deal with desktops and infrastructure management.  Systems management will be covered by a new System Center user group that will be lead by David Gargan.  We’re going to expand our portfolio to cover the desktop.  Things that we’ll want to include are OS deployment, user mangement and Group Policy.  Windows Vista changed a lot in this regard with the launch of "Panther", the new OS deployment system that uses WIM files.  That’s invalidated old sysprep deployment solutions.  At first that seems like a bad thing but we’ll hope to show how that might not be so.  We’ll also try to clear up the mysteries of WDS,  BDD and MDT.
There’s also some new technologies on the horizon.  Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 (the new client) are on the way sometime over the next 18-24 months.  There’s some really intriguing things happening there that your business will want to look at … these will be business solutions, not just tech solutions so deployment requests will probably be quite rapid.
If you’re working in server or desktop and would like to present or sponsor events then please give us a shout.
We’ll hope to have you prepared in advance!
