Windows Server 2008 Books

February 21, 2008 Comments off

A new operating system, a new book shelf.  That’s the way things seem to go in our line of work.  Windows Server 2008 is already making it’s way into production around the world so I thought I’d dig up what books are out there.  The first place to check for us in Ireland is good old Easons.

Amazon is a regular place for us to go shopping.  There’s LOADS on there.

Finally, I’ll mention the books that are by Mark Minasi … not that I’m biased or anything 😉  Mark is leading the authoring of 3 "Mastering Windows Server 2008" books.  The first will be for newbies to server administration, the second will cover materials common to all administrators and the third book will cover those advanced subjects that only 20% of administrators will typically use, e.g. NAP and WDS.  What’s going to be different about Mark’s books is that they are based on the RTM release of Windows Server 2008 and not beta or RC versions.  I can confirm that there are differences.

If anyone has any recommendations then please do post some comments and share your thoughts.

Microsoft Ireland Showcase: Windows 2008, VS 2008 and SQL 2008

February 21, 2008 Comments off
There’s only a few spaces left for the Microsoft Showcase Event  that will officially launch Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008 in Ireland.  I’d suggest you register as soon as possible.

At the event you will be brought through a 2 hour experience which includes a introduction of the three products and a tour where you can observe demos and gather information on your specific areas of interest. The venue will be divided up into various areas covering a broad range of topics across the three products.

There are three sessions to choose from:
  • 12.00 – 14.00 Now FULL
  • 15.00 – 17.00 Register Now
  • 18.00 – 20.00 Now FULL

And you will leave with a promotional kit that includes versions of the Windows Server 2008 operating system, Microsoft SQL Server 2008, and Microsoft Visual Studio 2008.

Come And Get It: Wndows Server 2008 Is Available!

February 4, 2008 Comments off
As I mentioned earlier, Windows Server 2008 did actually go RTM today.  I’ve just downloaded it from TechNet, courtesy of my IT Pro Momentum account.   TechNet has x64 versions of the below available:

  • DVD with Datacenter, Enterprise and Standard
  • MUI
  • WAIK (Windows Automated Installation Kit – includes WSIM and all that WindowsPE and ImageX goodness)

A document states that x86 is due in the coming days.

By the way, Vista SP1 did get RTM today but won’t be available on Windows Update until March.  I haven’t seen a dedicated download link for it yet.

W2008 RTM Today?

February 4, 2008 1 comment
I’ve heard that Windows Server 2008 would be released to manufacturing today.  This would coincide with the rumoured RTM of Windows Vista SP1.  License subscribers with rights to download Windows Server should expect to be able to have access within a few days of RTM.  MSDN and TechNet subscribers will probably have access within a few weeks.
